Things To Do After You Get Your new computer

Don’t you just love grabbing that new notebook or desktop with logo Windows VISTA home Premium or something else for that matter. It’s new, the cover awesome. Screen is the size that you decided, finally although your parents recommended 15.4 but you wanted 17inch monitor. Whatever you want, try to get the cutting edge computer within your budget.

First thing is of course, make sure it works. Ask the geek guys to open your computer. Check it out. You don’t wanna drive back just to ask for another. Hey, gas price ain’t cheap and you could be driving 50 miles to get a notebook. If the geek (sales person) can’t even show you the laptop; it’s possible may the PC is not working or you got an unfriendly sales person. Don’t switch for another computer. One more point before this one, do a detailed review on what kind of computer you need. If you are doing a lot of video editing, gaming, fastest processor, get more RAM, bigger hard disk, and of course a graphic adapter. If your budget is low, go for a small screen. Talk to the geek and you will show you which you one you need. They are smart at selling EXPENSIVE computers! Lol!!

Now that the computer is at home. Don’t run it immediate. If it has a battery, charge it fully. Then do the following things because you know you hate stuff that are pushed back to you without your asking. For example, You only bought a computer and not all that trial softwares and crap. They push them to you, I guess the law allows.

1. Uninstall all trial software unless you are going to buy them. Common trial software are video editing software, Microsoft works, etc.

2. Disable automatic update (for your windows VISTA only) many a time when a program that used to work and don’t work, it could that the latest update of VISTA made the old program go nuts. If there are security related updates, try each one at a time and see if your program works.

2. If your vista has a search tool bar like yahoo or Google. It’s up to you. If you are mad that a computer should come just with operating system and nothing you ever asked for, try removing them.

3. Get on the Internet and download firefox and use it.

4. Install flash player, adobe acrobat reader, QuickTime plugin for Firefox. Firefox alerts you if a particular internet media is unable to play, follow the step. If it fails to install, then do manually install the plug-ins.

5. Then delete or hide that shortcut which says “Internet Explorer”. I would recommend that you don’t use it all. If you need that, you can get it by typing “iexplore” in Start->RUN. If your computer going to be shared by others, deleting that shortcut to Internet explorer kind of helps.

6. Computer probably has Norton anti-virus, trial version that is or some kind of other anti-virus software. Did you ask for them? That’s what I mean. These bunches of corporates shake hands and make our life easy? Well not really. Keep that program if you like. When the trial period expires, you gotta pay them to continue using it. And anti-virus programs require frequent updates so they can catch new viruses. Most Tech Gurus say that Norton is one heck of hungry program; It usages PC’s resources to the MAX and slows downs everything; well in comparison to other anti-virus programs such as AVG. AVG also has a free version you can try.

7. That’s it? Well, have fun with your new computer, here are a few things you can do:

  • Download Google earth. Just google it and you can easily find that.
  • Download a simple yet powerful program, openoffice works just like a Microsoft office. It’s free and has everything you wanted. Word processor, spreadsheet, presentation and database.
  • Download Paint.net (a simple program for editing photos, works great and is free)’
  • Download spybot search and destroy, a simple, nimble and a powerful program that’s free.
  • You are have too much fun, do some homework now! LOL!!

Let’s talk more on the next post ok?

Thank you
