What to do when a program won’t run

With Vista, you can expect a perfectly working program to not work next day. Or the programs that you downloaded hoping it would run on VISTA, fails to run. What should you do ?
Try these steps and see if they help:
You can follow them in random orders if you like.
- Run the Program’s Recovery feature. Most advanced programs have this feature. You can find it when you click on the Programs and Features - Uninstall. If that doesn’t solve the problem, try updating the program.
- View Event Viewer. It can tell a lot about why a program is not running. Vista is also pretty smart and can tell you why a program is not running. In fact, you should be shown a dialog saying, a particular program was unable to run due to so and so error. But much of that would be beyond our simple knowledge about computers, right ?
- Right click on a program icon and select the compatibility tab; Run this program as Windows XP. Does that run your program ?
- Try removing recent updates made by your VISTA. That is, one at a time. Uninstall recent update and then the run program, see if it works. Then uninstall the next one, and so on and continue that way. Often I have found this “Auto Update” feature of VISTA as the culprit to not running many of my programs that just worked fine a day ago!! Even if you are doing this, please keep the updates related to “Security Issues”. Why does VISTA keep updating every day?, you might ask. Please send that question to Microsoft. Reason ? Answer? You know it. They shipped the product even before it was ready! Do you agree with that statement ?
- Update your program and see if it runs.
